"I was reminded of all this while watching the fine Steven Seagal film "Marked For Death," currently available on Netflix Instant. This is the 1990 follow-up to "Hard To Kill," which briefly took time out for Kelly LeBrock to put on her most low-cut dress and sleep with our ponytailed hero. The poster, attendantly, has her to Seagal's left, clutching his arm and looking all "THIS IS MY MAN."

The poster for "Marked For Death," in contrast, gives us two Seagals -- one in silhouette with a gun, and a full face glowering humorlessly, an accurate summary of what happens in the movie. Seagal shares all of three scenes with Joanna Pacula, who attempts to seduce him (flattering him by telling him it's rare to meet a man like him who isn't married, gay or "trying to find himself"), but he simply gets the information he needs and is on his way. Pacula is never seen again; after the final shooting, the movie's simply over.

This is not, perhaps, the most socially responsible attitude to take, but it is, nonetheless, preferable to the deep-breathing and worrying of, say, Jessica Biel. The sogginess of most action romances, in fact, is nothing more than a way to pad the running time without actually providing real chemistry or banter. Here's wishing they would either make those roles less token and cynical and more fleshed-out (unlikely), or drop them entirely."


Would you really want to see a female action hero with a man holding her down? No. The same applies for men. Unless it is vitally integral to the story, axe 'em. The best action movies are lean & mean; not an ounce of fat.

And I don't want to see no more goddamn bitches rescued. I'd much rather see her carry her weight if not the save the day all together.

De Niro. Seagal. Rodriguez. Hill. These household names obviously bring to mind a badass, pure-awesomeness sort of vibe, and that's exactly the stage that's been set as Robert De Niro, Steven Seagal, Michelle Rodriguez, and Jonah Hill have all supposedly been cast alongside Danny Trejo in the feature-length expansion of Machete, one of four fake trailers that accompanied Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez's original Grindhouse double feature.

A variety of sites, from Bloody Disgusting, to The Playlist to /Film, are reporting varying tidbits of the news. I just hope for pure awesomeness's sake that it's all true. For Danny Trejo to be surrounded by this kind of class in a movie premise as lowly as Machete is truly ingenious. This skyrockets Robert Rodriguez's next project to the top of my list. I can't wait. Stay tuned.

Steven Seagal to be "Under Siege" Again?

This is a few days old, but you gotta start somewhere.

The poor-man's Diehard series may be getting another look. Casey Ryback himself, a.k.a. Steven Seagal, told MTV there's been "offers" to do a third entry in the Under Siege series, and that he's interested in the prospect. Using adjectives like "modern," "mystical," and "extraterrestrial," Seagal said he wanted to do something other than "the typical," which, with his recent filmography in mind, would be a nice change of pace for the struggling former-star, much like Jean-Claude Van Damme's raved about J.C.V.D..

Under Siege was arguably the height of Seagal's popularity. Directed by Andrew Davis, the film co-starred Tommy Lee Jones and Gary Busey and was a commercial success, and even supported by such critics as Siskel and Ebert, as seen here on At the Movies. A less-successful sequel was released two years later, and the series ultimately fizzled out, along with Seagal himself. Will this potential return to the screen be in the revitalizing vein of J.C.V.D.? Or will it follow the less successful (critically) franchise reboots such as with Die Hard, Rambo, and Indiana Jones, among others? Here's to it happening, for it'd be nice to see our man Seagal get back on the big screen.
